Candle Cove was a puppet series that aired on a local station in Ohio from 1971-1972. The series was funded by Hey Kids! Studios, a low-budget station intended to be the kid-friendly equivalent of Adult Swim. Strange, wild, and truly bizarre shows that could only be thought of by a very outgoing individual. Candle Cove was produced, directed, and written by Emerson Grimes. He had brought some other pieces of work to the station such as Pip and Angus, The Train is Coming, Knock! Knock! (as an uncredited writer), and of course: Candle Cove. Emerson got his start at Hey Kids! Studios when he was introduced by a work buddy named Tom Thrives, who has been making shows for Hey Kids! Studios for a while. Emerson was noted to have a tendency to make his shows and scripts quite dark. Too dark for a kids' show. It was very apparent in Candle Cove when executive producer Tom Thrives revealed that apparently Emerson wanted a kid to be skinned alive on camera by the Skin-Taker in the second episode, but it was replaced with a musical number when they couldn't find a child actor. Emerson said he got this dark sense of storytelling from reading works of Roald Dahl. Charlie and The Chocolate Factory and Matilda were one of his biggest influences with their morally based themes mixed with dark and twisted undertones. Candle Cove was inspired by a tale Emerson read called: The Nickerbockers Tale. The premise of Candle Cove was that there was a cowardly pirate named Percy who with his ship: The Laughingstock, would go out through the lands of Candle Cove to explore. However, as the series progressed, the show took on a more story-driven tone. The Skin-Taker would be revealed to have a human side with a daughter, the crew would go to war with the Skin-Taker to save the cove, and much more. The series was said to have been lost to time; however, as of 2022, Candle Cove resurfaced onto YouTube, and now most of the episodes are available to watch for free! (Disclaimer: If you came this far, note that the series was a creepypasta by Kris Straub! The story was then adapted to a YouTube web series by Blaze Skyblaster, me! If you watched and enjoyed the series, thanks for enjoying my show! See you guys soon! - Blaze Skyblaster)
